5 Tips for Smart College Studying

Posted by Jessica

Here are some quick study tips to start the year off strong!

#1 Get the big picture! In our digital world, it’s hard to get a clear view of how all your due dates overlap. What do you mean my Psych paper is due on the same day as my Chem midterm!! Once you get the syllabus for each class, assign each a color and fill out key dates on a planner on your wall. You’ll see where the rough spots are and can plan a way to smooth them out.

#2 Cancel out distractions. Distractions can be parents, roommates, siblings, the sound of fun you’re not having. Noise cancelling headphones are a great way of shutting out the world AND letting other people know to leave you alone so you can focus.

OttLite LED Tunnel Lamp with USB#3 Light it Right.  Research shows studying under natural daylight increases retention and productivity. The sun is not always on your schedule, so try an OttLite natural daylight lamp. You’ll see details clearly with reduced glare and eyestrain. And, many come with USB charging ports to charge your devices while you study.

#4 Unplug. We look at our phones hundreds of times a day. It’s a habit and a fun way to keep connected. But, when you’re studying, try to disconnect. Turn off your phone, Snapchat and your email. Set a goal for 50 minutes and then take the phone out of your desk drawer for a quick peek.

#5 Find a spot that works for you. Bed for reading; library for reviewing notes to get test ready; kitchen table for spreading out your notes, books, laptop; outside for creative writing; in a group for diving deeper. Find what works best for you for the task at hand.
